A Case of Transient Drug-induced Hepatic Coma Following Administration of Rifampicin


Abstract
A case of abrupt and transient hepatic coma during rifampicin therapy was reported with review of literatures.
This 28 year old female patient was admitted with tuberculosis of the lumbar spine and cold abscess on the pelvis. Rifampicin was taken by mouth from 10th hospital day after surgical procedures, and ceased 3rd rifampicin day because of intensive coma is rapidly developed. From 17th hospital day, gradually, her consciousness was recovered following to take high doses of adrenocorticosteroids, anti¡þbiotics and several coservative supporting managements.
Since 25th hospital day, patient has administered isoniazid, ethambutol and stretomycin again, nevertheless, hepatic conditions of the patient is revealed no evidence to worse during several months beyond discharged from hospital.
It is advisable, that should be watch out over the hepatic condition of the patient before and during rifampicin alone or combined antituberculous chemotherapy.
